49 victims of Pulse massacre remembered in daylong services

On the day of the shooting on June 12, 2016, before most of the victims were even identified, Trump, then a candidate, sent out a tweet congratulating himself on "being right on radical Islamic terrorism".

The 21-year-old works with LGBTQ youth at Our Gente, a program of The Epicenter in Salinas.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson said during the memorial, "friends and neighbors. what a terrorist does is try to divide us". All of the victims were people of color - Black and Latinx members of Orlando's queer community, who were celebrating their diversity during Pride Month.

"I still come back sometimes and go back to that night, and it's like I know we need to go on with our lives, especially with the type of work that I do". The tragedy happened just one year ago in Orlando, Florida. Police intermingled with people in the crowd, shaking hands and accepting hugs.

Mateen opened fire at the club at around 2 a.m. Police ultimately killed Mateen during a shootout after police stormed the building at around 5 a.m.

"It breaks my heart that your sanctuary was taken from you, but I know we are resilient, and I know we will not let hate win", she said.

The service began what would be nearly 24 hours of observations to remember the victims and the dozens of Pulse patrons who were wounded when Omar Mateen opened fire and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.

A fundraising "Rainbow Run" took place over the weekend and a businessman donated thousands of dollars to eight gay and lesbian students for their college studies. She is charged with obstruction and with aiding and abetting in federal court.
