US President Donald Trump gave the order to strike Syria with dozens of cruise missiles "during dessert" with visiting Chinese leader Xi Jinping, he said in an interview aired Wednesday.

In an interview on Fox Business Network on Wednesday, Trump told Maria Bartiromo that the world leaders were eating the "most handsome piece of chocolate cake that you've ever seen" when he notified President Xi Jinping that the airstrikes in Syria would start.
The U.S. struck Syria with 59 missiles launched from two Navy ships in the Mediterranean last week hitting the Shayrat base, near the city of Homs in Syria.
The chemical attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun on 4 April killed 87 people, many of them children. Trump said he immediately asked Defense Secretary James Mattis to lay out America's options after the attack. What do you do?' And we made the determination to do it, so the missiles are on the way.
Trump said in the interview that President Xi "paused for 10 seconds and then he asked the interpreter to please say it again".

"He said to me, anybody that uses gases - you could nearly say or anything else - but anybody that was so brutal and uses gases to do that to young children and babies, it's OK. he was OK with it, he was OK", Trump said.
"Our [military] technology, our equipment, is better than anybody by a factor of five", Trump said.
"So what happens is, I said, 'We've just launched 59 missiles heading to Iraq".

Trump said he and Xi had finished dinner and were winding down a day-long meeting in Palm Beach.
