Trump declined to comment when asked whether he was aware of Zarif's presence in Biarritz. Manufacturers around the world are smarting from the trade dispute between the USA and China, which has led to new import taxes on hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of goods.

Iran's foreign minister made a flying visit for talks with host France at the G7 summit on Sunday, as Paris ramped up efforts to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington, a dramatic diplomatic move that the White House said had surprised them.

For several months, Macron has taken a lead role in trying to save the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran, which has been unraveling since Trump pulled the USA out of the agreement.

The other leaders of the G-7 countries, which include Germany, Britain, Canada, Italy and Japan, have carefully sidestepped their differences with Trump, known for his short fuse and skepticism of global cooperation.

In a Twitter post, a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry said Zarif will "continue talks regarding the recent measures between the presidents of Iran and France" during his visit to Biarritz. Abe, standing beside him, said they breached United Nations resolutions.

Johnson and Tusk sparred before the summit over who would be to blame if Britain leaves the European Union on October 31 without a withdrawal agreement.

That conclusion was one world leaders reached long ago and the goal of the 2015 accord, which took years to negotiate. However, the United States president has now revealed that he encouraged Macron to "go ahead" and continue talks with Tehran.

Johnson, shaking the hand of French President Emmanuel Macron, congratulated him on his handling of a "difficult" discussion at the G-7 leaders' dinner the night before. "There are all sorts of people who will take any excuse at all to interfere with trade and to frustrate trade deals and I don't want to see that", he said.

Trump said the two had discussed a trade deal with the European Union and that he hoped Washington would not have to consider imposing tariffs on German auto exports.

The French president has held several telephone discussions with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani since July.

Iran's president on Monday said that even though talks and meetings with Western countries had a low chance of success, his government would not miss the opportunity to negotiate.

In response to the tougher U.S. sanctions and what it says is the failure of European powers party to the deal, France, Britain and Germany, to compensate it for lost revenues, Tehran has responded with a series of moves, including retreating from some of its commitments to limit its nuclear activity.

Just before boarding Air Force One for France, Trump tweeted another threat of new tariffs on French wine in retaliation for France's digital services tax.
