Former Bears running back Cedric Benson reported dead in motorcycle crash

Former NFL and Texas running back Cedric Benson was killed Saturday night in a motorcycle crash in Austin, Texas.

Emergency officials in Austin, Texas, told the American-Statesman that they are investigating a crash that killed Benson and a passenger.

Benson spent three seasons in Chicago but achieved his greatest success with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he played from 2008-11.

Former Texas Longhorns running back Cedric Benson has passed away, per multiple reports.

Benson attended Robert E. Lee High in Midland, Texas, and is considered among the greatest high school players in that state's history, finishing his career with 8,423 yards rushing.

Benson's brother broke the news on Facebook early Sunday morning.

The veteran journalist was working on a feature story for WVUE Fox 8 about stunt pilot and flight instructor Franklin J.P. The station wrote on Facebook the 53-year-old was covering a story at the airport when she died.

Benson was a star at Texas, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards all four years and accumulated 2,013 total yards his senior year.

Austin police said a minivan was trying to cross an intersection when it ran into a motorcycle, CNN affiliate KXAN reported.

The Packers designated Benson to return from injured reserve later in the season, but the injury proved to be season-ending.

Benson was a 4th overall pick of the Chicago Bears in 2005. He was a consensus All-American, 2004 Doak Walker Award victor, and second on the UT all-time rushing list.

Unfortunately, personal issues and legal troubles caused the Bears to release him after just three seasons. He had his best year as an National Football League player in 2009 with the Bengals, where he rushed for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns.
