Following a year's hiatus, the Nintendo World Championships are back.

Additional presentations will dive deeper into other previously-announced titles like Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, with Nintendo set to announce the full line-up in the coming weeks.

They're using the "world" in the title about as accurately as Americans do for the World Series in their peculiar sports, as anyone in the U.S. or Canada can register to compete. The event will hold qualifying events via select Best Buy stores across the United States where fans can start to work their way up the finals on October 7. Admittedly, the game that players are tasked with playing in order to make it to The Nintendo World Championships 2017 is one that many likely wouldn't have expected, with Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS being the game of choice in this particular instance. Those with the best time over the two-day event in each location's age groups will advance to the NWC in NY.

In its history, BYU has had seven players named as candidates for the award, whether as watch list mentions or semifinalists. The No. 22-ranked Spartans begin action on Tuesday, Aug. 15 hosting an exhibition against Colgate at 5 p.m.

Nintendo World Championships 2017 is the third installment of the multi-game tournament; the first kicked off in 1990 and the second went down in 2015. Those aged 13 and above will race on Bowser Castle 1 as Bowser with the identical cart configurations. The first event gave three World Champion titles for each category, players from 11 and below, players from 12-17 and competitors aged 18 and above.

In addition, the qualifier locations will also be holding demos for Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Returns.

Head over to the official site for details on what specifically will be played during qualification rounds and where you can find those events.
