Woody Johnson, the billionaire owner of the New York Jets, has been confirmed as the new USA ambassador to the UK.

A veteran political fundraiser and donor, Johnson initially served as Jeb Bush's finance chairman in the 2016 presidential election, but endorsed Trump after Bush dropped out of the race.

His appointment has been rumored since January, when Trump congratulated Johnson at a luncheon on his move to Saint James.

In 2000, Johnson purchased the Jets for $635 million, which was the third-highest price paid for a professional sports team at the time and was the highest for NY. He'll be replaced by his brother, Chris. He also served on the NFL Commissioner Committee, which helped select Roger Goodell as the successor to Paul Tagliabue out of a field of 180 candidates.

And now we know that the man tasked with telling that story is Glen Mazzara, current showrunner on AMC's The Walking Dead . But the director thanked screenwriter Akiva Goldsman that made him see how the movie could be done.

At his senate confirmation hearing, a smiling Mr Johnson joked that his ownership of the New York Jets had taught him the importance of "commitment and perseverance". It's yet to be seen if Johnson will play a role.

Mr Johnson, who replaces Matthew Barzun in the role, is not the first National Football League owner to venture into transatlantic diplomacy.

Then president Barack Obama appointed Dan Rooney - the late Pittsburgh Steelers owner - to be the United States Ambassador to Ireland in 2009.
