Sonny Bill Williams Will Appeal World Rugby's Decision To Uphold Ban

New Zealand Rugby felt their showpiece match of two halves against Taranaki and Counties Manukau should count as one of the four "meaningful matches" he must miss as well as a Counties Manukau pre-season encounter.

Williams received the suspension for a shoulder charge on wing Anthony Watson during the second Test on July 1.

New Zealand are appealing against the way World Rugby have applied Sonny Bill Williams' suspension for the red card he received during the match against the British & Irish Lions.

New Zealand Rugby hoped Williams could serve the ban by missing the third Lions test, the final match of the Auckland Blues' Super Rugby season and two other games before the Wallabies test.

New Zealand Rugby's efforts to have Sonny Bill Williams available for the first Bledisloe Cup test have fallen short with World Rugby finding the matches submitted by the national body to count towards his four-week ban for a risky tackle did not make the grade.

In a statement Friday, New Zealand rugby said it would ask World Rugby's appeals committee to review the decision which will see Williams complete his suspension on August 20, the day after the Bledisloe Cup test in Sydney.

Yesterday World Rugby confirmed the suspension would run until August 19th, the day of the first Test against Australia in Sydney.

The All Blacks attempted to justify their now annual "Game of three halves" warm-up match against Counties and Taranaki, but that appeal was also rejected.

However, World Rugby ruled that the inter-squad game could not be considered as a meaningful match and would not form part of the suspension.

"As the matter will now be decided by an appeal committee, no further comment will be made at this time".

The All Blacks' second Rugby Championship fixture sees them face Australia again a week later at Dunedin.
