The occupied lands have witnessed tensions ever since Israeli forces imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into al-Aqsa Mosque compound two years ago.

He claimed the detectors were the latest attempt by Israel to change the delicate balance of prayer and visiting rights, known as the status quo, at the site which is revered by both Muslims and Jews, who call it the Temple Mount. According to media reports, several Palestinians were injured during the clashes.

The Israeli measures, including CCTVs covering the entire compound, checkpoints and metal detectors at the entrances, were installed after three Palestinian Muslims with Israeli citizenship shot dead two Israel policemen on Friday morning. The attackers, believed to be Israeli Arabs, were also killed. Immediately after the incident, Israel shut down the compound, saying that security forces need to check the site for more militants or ammunition.

Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah said on Tuesday that Israel, as the occupying power, is responsible for the current escalation in Jerusalem and its Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites.

"They allow radicals to break into the mosque without any impunity, while they place a humiliating system to search Muslims".

The Turkish authorities accuse a movement loyal to the United States based cleric, Fethullah Gulen , of organising the plot. But Mr Tezcan and his party call the state of emergency a "controlled coup" that must be revoked immediately.

He added that Muslims would not accept less than entering the mosque with dignity.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority, Jordan and the Arab League stressed their rejection of any adjustment to the status quo in Jerusalem and Al Aqsa Mosque.

Sabri joined other Al-Aqsa officials in calling for Palestinians to not pass through the metal detectors.

And while the Fatah Movement called on Monday for a "day of rage" against increased Israeli security measures, the Hamas Movement said the battle for Al-Aqsa would remain open.

"They are gradually trying to completely control the mosque", he said.
