Jose Fernandez tragically died last September in a boating crash that rattled the entire baseball community. In the NY market, the souped-up batting practice session drew more viewers than any in the history of the event.
Tonight, Judge will start in the American League outfield with Houston's George Springer and Boston's Mookie Betts, who replaces injured Angels OF Mike Trout.
It has Aaron Judge, just 25 and finding out what being a New York Yankee - and therefore a full-fledged, everyone-recognizes-him star - is all about. Harper claims it's not the notoriously tough Philadelphia fanatics that are the rudest among National League East squads.
Tonight will be the first All-Star Game in 14 years that won't decide home-field advantage for the World Series (thank goodness), and with the freedom of again having a true exhibition, Major League Baseball has the opportunity to get experimental, if it wants.
Washington Nationals' star Bryce Harper proposed that the two leading vote-getters should pick the teams for the All-Star Game, regardless of league.
Heat advisory issued for NYC through Thursday
The lack of night time cooling can cause a risky buildup in heat stress for the homeless and those without air conditioning. High heat and humidity will continue over the next few days as high pressure remains in control of our weather.
"It's pretty insane", Harper said. As you could tell by Harper's All-Star Game swan dive and subsequent hair flip, the guy thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
While Harper's cleats recognized Fernandez, Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna said he is dedicating the game to the fallen ace. "I don't really think about it much".
For him, a chance to see two interleague super-teams going at it outweighs any sense of tradition that the current format offers.
"I hit the ball to left field a lot and Yankee Stadium is pretty big in left field", Harper said. "So I'm looking forward to what we can do this year and go from there". It's entirely possible that NY is actually Harper's second-favorite place on Earth after Las Vegas and he's just messing with everyone again.
