The US Marine Corps transport plane that crashed, killing all 16 troops aboard, plummeted to the ground after "something went wrong" while at cruising altitude, a general said yesterday. The 16 servicemembers killed in the crash were not yet identified.

That debris prompted MS governor Phil Bryant to speak up, warning people to not take items from the crash site, or else risk prosecution.

"They are looking at the debris and will be collecting information off of that to figure out what happened", Aranda said. The plane crashed just off US 82, about 85 miles north of Jackson, with debris found on both sides of the road. He said Wednesday that debris from the KC-130 is scattered over 2 to 3 miles and that it likely will take between five and six days to clean up.

Federal Aviation Administration officials had contacted the Marines when the plane disappeared from air-traffic-control radar over Mississippi, CNN reported.

Bryant, in statements Tuesday on Twitter, said law enforcement authorities have received reports that items are being taken from the crash site.
