London van attack: Suspect identified and arrested in terror investigation

According to witnesses from the scene, the driver drove his van towards the Finsbury Park mosque yelling, "I want to kill all Muslims!"

"There was this white van stopped outside Finsbury Park mosque that seemed to have hit people who were coming out after prayers had finished". On a Facebook post, he called on Londoners to "pull together".

Locals massing at barriers, angry at police, people confused about what has happened.

"At this stage in the investigation, it is believed that the suspect acted alone but we are of course investigating all the circumstances leading up to the attack", the Metropolitan police said in a statement.

Organisers, who arranged the event under the banner of "No To Islamophobia - Unity with Finsbury Park Mosque", say the attack occurred in a climate of attempts to demonise Muslims by sections of the press, commentators and some politicians.

"I was on my bike and he just came up to me and said, 'Inbred.' Just out there [on the road]".

Police said the 48-year-old man who was driving the van has been arrested and taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Police on Tuesday questioned a man suspected of deliberately mowing down Muslim worshippers in North London, as the interior minister said Britain was "bruised but not broken" by a series of terror attacks.

Britain's terrorist alert has been set at "severe", meaning an attack is highly likely.

London police, already stretched by a series of major incidents around the capital, are putting more officers on the street to reassure the public after a driver plowed into a crowd of people leaving a mosque yesterday.
