The nation's largest toymaker Mattel announced on Tuesday that they will be producing new versions of Ken - Barbie's lifelong companion - and these new Kens will have a slightly different look.
Mattel is introducing new Barbie dolls that will allow children to truly identify with being a Barbie girl (or boy) in a Barbie world, with its diverse "New Crew" collection.
Ken will be sold in three body shapes: "slim", "broad" and "original".
Tom Brady dreams of playing football in China
The NFL has played exhibition or regular-season games in nine different countries, but China isn't one of them. Brady is promoting the launch of Under Armour's athlete recovery sleepwear.
This calculated diversification includes black Kens with cornrows, Kens with a man bun, and male fashion blogger Kens in flannel, Gingham, and skinny ties. Ken hasnt changed much since he was first introduced 56 years ago as Barbies blue-eyed, chiseled boyfriend. The makeover is part of the toy company's plan to make its dolls more diverse and try to appeal to today's kids, many of whom would rather pick up an iPad than a doll. Last year, the line of new Barbie dolls won "Doll of the year" at the Toy Industry Association's Annual T.O.T.Y.
"By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation", Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and general manager at Mattel, said in a press release. All of them will be on store shelves by the holidays. Since introducing the different body types for the dolls in 2016, Mattel saw a 7 percent boost in sales.
