In multiple weird Sunday morning interviews an attorney for President Donald Trump insisted that the president is "not under investigation by the special counsel" despite reports that Trump is under investigation for allegedly obstructing justice for firing of former FBI Director James Comey.
By asking then-FBI Director James Comey for loyalty, President Trump may have been attempting to fundamentally compromise the independence of Comey and of the FBI.
Mr Trump tweeted: "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"
Rosenstein privately acknowledged that he may need to recuse himself from the investigation, sources told this week. Mueller broadened the probe with the President now under investigation for obstruction of justice in probe regarding possible collusion by his campaign with the Kremlin.
