That statement comes despite the Queen's Speech being scheduled for Wednesday. Yet they are now climbing over themselves to get the DUP to sign up to some form of a deal to ensure their continued survival.

At Sinn Fein's manifesto launch last month, the party's Northern Ireland leader, Michelle O'Neill, said she was "confident that as the consequences of Brexit become clearer more and more people from a unionist background will be open to the idea of exploring new relationships on this island".

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is in London for his first meeting as Taoiseach with the British Prime Minister Theresa May. There is a steady dialogue between the two sides that has never stopped at any point. She said that the DUP was "ready to dance" with Sinn Féin, but it takes two to tango. If she waters down her exit strategy - as her predecessor, David Cameron, has urged her to consider - that could set off a rebellion from hard-line "leave" supporters, including David Davis, the Cabinet minister responsible for negotiating Britain's withdrawal, and the foreign secretary, Boris Johnson. The electorate clearly did not give May her mandate for a hard Brexit, which would have meant giving up access to the single market and the customs union. Then women would no longer have to travel to England for an abortion and they and their medical carers would no longer be treated as criminals.

Mr Williamson said of the upcoming Brexit negotiations: "Labour has attempted to block the wishes of the British people every step of the way.

We are talking about a confidence and supply agreement with them", she said.

On his talks in London with Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday, he said they had offered an "Irish solution to an English problem" as giving Northern Ireland special European Union status after Brexit to keep an open border on the island. "But we have to be honest, it will take much more than that for us to be convinced that the DUP tail is not wagging the Tory dog", he told reporters.

However, Hammond, the Chancellor, will appear on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show on Sunday to argue for a softer Brexit with an emphasis on maintaining free trade links with the EU.

The Irish government statement said there was agreement on the importance of a functioning executive in the context of the Brexit negotiations due to start next week.

GERRY Adams has said he told Theresa May that she is in breach of the Good Friday Agreement in their first face-to-face meeting since the election. "They can't have it both ways, it has to be dealt with sensibly", she said. Whoever is Prime Minister will face pressure from Tory back-benchers, Leave campaigners outside Parliament and the right-wing press to implement a hard Brexit.

"We have to change, and if we don't we deserve to die", she added.
