London fire: 58 presumed dead in Grenfell Tower blaze, say police

British authorities are launching a criminal investigation into the London apartment building fire - as the death toll from the blaze has almost doubled, to 30.

"Sadly, at this time there are 58 people who we have been told were in the Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing, and therefore sadly, I have to assume that they are dead", he said.

Newly-appointed Indian-origin housing minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government, Alok Sharma, said, "Every single family will be rehoused in the local area".

A revised death toll is expected to be released later today. "So that 58 would include that 30", he said.

Late Sunday, the Metropolitan Police released three photos from inside Grenfell Tower, which showed in close detail how the fire charred the 24-story building that once housed up to 600 people in 120 apartments. He said the number of dead was likely to rise further. "They feel the Government and local council haven't done enough to help them in the aftermath of this horrific incident, or to provide answers to their increasingly urgent questions".

After her visit, Mrs May said: "Everyone affected by this tragedy needs reassurance that the Government is there for them at this bad time - and that is what I am determined to provide".

Cundy also reiterated requests for family members to get in touch if they were still unsure what had happened.

But accusations of a slow official response have heaped pressure on the premier, whose Conservative government remains in limbo after losing its parliamentary majority in last week's election.

Another demonstration took place outside May's Downing Street office, while later in the evening, hundreds of mourners gathered near the tower for a candlelight vigil.

Alongside both police and fire investigations into the blaze, she has promised to set up a public inquiry.

Meanwhile, the government announced that those displaced by the massive blaze will be given the equivalent of at least $7,000 from an emergency fund. We want to rehouse people in a good home as quickly as we can.

Finally he claimed the negotiations would offer "a revolution" which would solve a longstanding issue in British politics. The imminent sacking of a man nicknamed "the undertaker" for his dry manner was openly discussed in the ruling party.

"We started helping people on the third floor, but we ended up on the tenth floor", she said.

"As a nation, we continue to reflect and pray for all those who have been directly affected by these events".

A solemn Queen Elizabeth II marked a minute of silence Saturday for victims of the London high-rise inferno that killed at least 30 people as exhausted firefighters continued their grim search for more bodies.
