British Prime Minister Theresa May has ordered a full public inquiry into the high-rise apartment blaze that killed at least 17 people in London amid growing public anxiety about whether similar blazes could occur in other housing blocks around the country.

"It would not be appropriate for us to comment or for others to speculate on any aspect of fire, or its causes, in advance of these inquiries", managing director Ray Bailey said.

"I really hope the number of fatalities does not reach triple figures", Cundy said.

"We as the police, we investigate criminal offences, I am not sitting here and saying there are criminal offences that have been committed, that's why you do an investigation, to establish it", he said.

Earlier today, Scotland Yard expressed fears that all the victims of the massive fire that engulfed a 24-storey tower in west London may never be identified.

Residents said they had been complaining for years about lax standards while aspects of a recent $13 million refurbishment to the building have fallen under suspicion of allowing the fire to spread more rapidly than expected.

Vanezis said the best chance to identify victims may be if firefighters find bits of teeth or bone, medical devices like pacemakers or artificial implants.

Cundy said one of the victims was a person who died in hospital.

Firefighters were using drones and sniffer dogs to search the building, saying that some of the upper floors are still inaccessible to humans because of concerns about the stability of the structure.

The official number of deaths has sparked anger and confusion within the local community, where people believe the true number is considerably higher.

- Scotland Yard has launched a criminal investigation into the fire after it emerged that cladding panels similar to those likely to have been used on the tower block have been widely prohibited on tall buildings in the U.S. since 2012.

May met victims privately at a central London hospital on Friday and had expressed her sorrow on television on Thursday after meeting emergency services personnel.

Locals yelled questions at mayor Sadiq Khan when he walked through the neighbourhood on Friday.

"How many children died? What are you going to do about it?" asked 7-year-old Kai Ramos.

The building was home to around 600 people and whole families remain missing after the fire, which forced residents to flee through black smoke down the single stairwell, jump out of windows or even drop their children to safety.

Meanwhile, experts have said sprinklers could have been fitted in the tower for £200,000, but Nick Paget-Brown, the Tory leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said there was not a "collective view" among residents in favour of installing them.
