Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he believes Trump fired him last month because he resisted a request to drop the Russian Federation investigation, especially as it related to former national security adviser Michael.

Carson's comments come as speculation mounts that Trump could attempt to fire Mueller, along with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller to lead the Russian Federation investigation last month.

Rosenstein appointed special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election, and has told lawmakers he would only fire him with good cause.

Mueller's investigators have asked for information and will talk to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

A few hours later, Trump again tweeted, this time attempting to divert attention toward his former rival, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, first saying: "Why is that Hillary Clinton's family and Democrats dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?"

Trump's Friday tweet was the first official confirmation that he is being investigated by the special counsel over the reasons he fired Comey last month.

Preet Bharara, the former US attorney in Manhattan, responded to Rosenstein's statement by tweeting: "Where is Rod Rosenstein's overdue statement responding to the President's repeated attacks on his appointment of Robert Mueller?".

As a president you can't do anything other than let him go and get the best deal possible. Cristiano Ronaldo is clearly unsettled after what was published earlier this week.

ABC said Rosenstein told Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand that she would have to assume those responsibilities if he disqualified himself from the investigation.

Rosenstein serves under Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Mr Comey testified it would be up to Mr Mueller to decide whether Mr Trump's action amounted to obstruction of justice, an act that could be cited in any effort in the Republican-led Congress to impeach him and remove him from office.

President Donald Trump has appeared to acknowledge he is under investigation in the inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the United States election.

Why is Mr Trump being investigated? White House officials said the president is not considering such a step. "Nice", Trump wrote on Twitter.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment, as did a Justice Department spokesperson.

Trump has vehemently denied any collusion between himself or any of his associates and Russian Federation.
