Sam Sallee says she's relied on the program in years past to help her family out during the summertime when her kids are done with classes at Otsego Public Schools.
That's a 25 percent increase from the average of 5,411 meals served daily in July 2015 and 10.8 percent of the 62,699 students who ate school lunches on a typical day during the 2015-16 school year.
When school ends, so does the main source of meals for many West Michigan children. This program helps families access milk-the most-requested yet least donated food bank item-regardless of whether or not a food bank has refrigeration units.
"The well-being of our youth is a shared priority among city, county, school and community leaders, and when school is out, collaboration between agencies is crucial", said Patrice Chamberlain, Director of the California Summer Meal Coalition at the Institute for Local Government.
In addition to the food provided in the Summer Club Program and through the pantry, Neal said the center will also send home any extra food with the children.
Children who depend on their school to provide meals during the academic year will have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer at no cost.

People of any age with a mental or physical disability that has been confirmed by the MDE, school district or public school academy and are enrolled in a public or nonprofit private school program are also eligible.
"We have churches, YMCAs, our schools", she added.
"Transportation is a barrier and it makes it more hard to run the summer nutrition programs in rural areas and sometimes even in some suburban areas as well", she said.
Small said the Maryland Food Bank would be able to accommodate any growth in the program and encourages it.
