The statement was made to NBC after the Washington Post reported Wednesday evening that Robert Mueller, the special counsel hired by the Justice Department, had widened the scope of the investigation to include the president.

In his testimony on June 8, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he believed Trump had fired him over his role as lead of the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the USA election and Trump campaign associates' possible ties to Russia.

After earlier reports had indicated that Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to close the agency's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, some lawmakers and legal experts said if the reports are true, Trump may have committed obstruction of justice, an impeachable offense.

After Comey's testimony in which he acknowledged telling Trump that he was not under investigation, Trump tweeted that he felt "total and complete vindication".

The obstruction of justice investigation into the president began days after Comey was sacked on May 9, according to people familiar with the matter.

Investigators for the special counsel investigating questions of Russian interference in the 2016 election will soon speak to senior intelligence officials, a source familiar with the matter has said. Any findings by the department's investigation would be referred to Congress, where lawmakers would determine whether to impeach the president.

In testimony on Capitol Hill last week, Comey said Mueller had a copy of that memo and several others Comey had written about his interactions with Trump.

White House Previews Trump's Overhaul Of Cuba Policies
Under Obama, the two countries restored diplomatic ties and direct communications, including air connections and postal service. Of major note, there will be no change to the " wet foot, dry foot " policy and the US embassy in Cuba will also remain open.

"The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", Kasowitz said via a spokesman.

President Donald Trump assailed reports of an obstruction of justice investigation into his conduct Thursday, calling allegations of collusion between his presidential campaign and Russian Federation a "phony story". Trump wrote on Twitter, in a pair of messages that ended with a reference to his campaign slogan "Make America Great Again".

"Mueller is setting up a dragnet of obstruction, financial questions and every aspect of Trump's life and his associates lives", Gingrich wrote on Twitter, adding "very risky".

For many Democrats, there's some irony in coming to Comey's defense and embracing his concerns about Trump.

Comey revealed last week under oath before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence that he provided the contents of one of the memos detailing his February 14 meeting with the president to a friend, believed to be Columbia University professor Daniel Richman, who read parts of it to a New York Times reporter.

Comey's carefully worded comments, and those of Andrew McCabe, who took over as acting Federal Bureau of Investigation director, suggested to some officials that a probe of Trump for attempted obstruction may have been launched after Comey's departure, particularly in light of Trump's alleged statements regarding Flynn. Last month, news surfaced that Kushner may have discussed creating a secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin with Kislyak.

A spokesman for the office of the special counsel declined comment. In sworn testimony before the Senate intelligence committee, fired FBI Director James Comey laid out in stark detail the steps Trump allegedly took to get Comey to back off the Flynn inquiry. It is unclear if McCabe, Comey's successor, has informed Trump of the change in the scope of the probe.
