Trump made the remarks while responding to questions on Comey's explosive testimony in which he accused the president of trying to stop a probe into the alleged Russian interference in the United States elections previous year.

On Comey coming out and boldly saying President Trump lied about him and the FBI, Durbin said "if the evidence was not so obvious, I would be shocked".

U.S. President Donald Trump is doubling down on his version of private conversations with fired FBI Director James Comey over the Russian Federation probe.

Senator Dick Durbin said it was not only a awful day for President Trump, but for Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who Comey appeared not to trust with information.

Trump also denied that he asked Comey for a loyalty pledge, asking "who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath?"

The committee also has asked Comey for any notes or memos that he has which would detail the handful of discussions he had with Trump. The House intelligence committee said Friday it requested an answer from the White House counsel by June 23.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication.and WOW, Comey is a leaker!"

He testified Thursday he didn't think about the possibility of their talks being recorded until Trump tweeted about it after his firing, "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

If either Trump's testimony or memos written by Comey about his conversations with the president turn out to be untrue, either man could be charged with lying to federal investigators.

Still, Marc Kasowitz, Trump's personal lawyer, was preparing to file a complaint early next week over Comey's testimony to the Justice Department's Inspector General's Office and the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to a person close to the legal team.

Richard Burr, the Republican chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, and Sen.

And Comey said he's all for the president releasing any tapes - if they exist.

"No, I didn't say that and I didn't say the other", he said. "Even folks who have been his critics don't question his integrity, his commitment to the rule of law and his intelligence", Warner said.
