It is the most significant sign yet that Mueller's investigation is extending beyond questions of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Spicer had said that Ruddy was at the White House Monday to meet with White House aides, but did not speak with the president. According to him, "only the President and his attorneys are authorized to comment" on the subject. The White House saying Ruddy never spoke directly with the President about Mueller.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said via email, "Chris speaks for himself".

A spokesman for Mueller declined to comment to the Washington Post.
