Search for New FBI Director Has Been 'Chaotic,' New Report Says

In a letter to White House Counsel Don McGahn, the Democrats said that "any such assertion of privilege is nearly certainly baseless, particularly given that Mr. Comey is no longer employed by the Trump administration".

Comey is scheduled to testify on June 8 before the Senate Intelligence Committee about his May 9 firing by Trump, first in public and then behind closed doors.

If President Trump invokes the privilege, it could bar Comey from revealing private conversations he had with the president about the FBI's Russian Federation investigation into Mike Flynn and Trump associates - and whether the president asked him to back off.

Kellyanne Conway told ABC's morning program Good Morning America that Trump is determining whether to use his presidential powers to block James Comey, whom Trump abruptly fired last month, from testifying.

Mr Comey was leading a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) probe into alleged Russian meddling in last year's United States presidential election and possible collusion by Mr Trump's campaign when the President fired him last month.

The President has written about three separate conversations he had with Comey about whether he was under investigation, he further elaborated on those conversations in a televised interview with NBC, and he tweeted about them. Trump later tweeted: "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" The paper also reported that Trump asked Comey to pledge loyalty to the president, something Comey refused to do.

The Comey associate, who wasnt authorized to discuss details of the testimony and spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to discuss the content of Comeys planned testimony. There is only one reason I can think of - Trump lied.

The report comes as there has been increasing talk of impeachment proceedings starting if it could be proven that Trump fired Comey to stop the investigation into Russian Federation.

"This is extraordinarily complex and we have a wonderful staff", she said, "but I think we would benefit from having an experienced investigator" to oversee the probe, she said. Much like the problems for executive privilege created by Trump's possibly waiving his office's exclusive right, however, the president's repeated public mentions of the matter may also make issuing a restraining order - let alone requesting one - legally hard, if not impossible.

Ahead of former FBI Director James Comey's much-anticipated testimony, Sen. If there was doubt about the reason for Comey's dismissal, Trump cleared it up by telling NBC News' Lester Holt that the Russian Federation probe had weighed on him.

The White House has denied those characterizations.

In his letter to Trump, Rosenstein called Comey "an articulate and persuasive speaker".

On Saturday, a White House spokesperson directed a question about the New York Times report to outside counsel - which did not immediately respond to a request comment. In fact, he testified in early May that he had not been pressured at all for political purposes to end any investigation, which strongly suggests that Trump's questions about Flynn were just clumsy attempts to help out a friend - as Comey also apparently thought at the time.
