Analysts say Qatar Airways' position as a major transcontinental carrier is now threatened.
Professor in global relations Abdul Latif al-Salemi told Asharq Al-Awsat that the severing of ties is not much different than the U.S. administration's demand for Qatar to stop supporting terrorism.
Some of Qatar's policies, such as its support for the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, clash with U.S. priorities; yet it also hosts a USA military base that is crucial to the fight against Islamic State.
Earlier this month, several Gulf states led by neighboring Saudi Arabia suspended diplomatic, trade and transport ties with Qatar over its alleged backing of terrorism, charges that the emirate denies.
In his strongest comments yet on the crisis, Erdogan added that Qatar was a country "on which a death sentenced had in some way been pronounced".
In all, 18 destinations in the region are now out of bounds for Qatar Airways, which has also been forced to close its offices in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Some 76 daily flights are likely to be grounded, majority operated by Qatar Airways, according to scheduling firm OAG.
Speaking after meeting Qatari foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Mr Johnson said: "I have been in touch with my counterparts across the region about the current tensions with Qatar".

Qatar has therefore turned to its real allies who share its political creed, such as Turkey and Iran, he told Asharq Al-Awsat.
The air embargo imposed on Qatar only applies to airlines from Qatar or registered there, the United Arab Emirates Civil Aviation Authority said on Tuesday.
The discussion also included telephonic conversations between US President Donald Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Iran said it is planning to send 100 tons of fresh fruit and legumes everyday.
Meanwhile, Iran's state-run IRNA news agency has said two Iranian navy vessels will stop off in Oman soon.
