Iran claims to have killed planner of Tehran terror attacks

Thirteen people were killed when gunmen and suicide bombers targeted the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Khomeini in a twin assault that lasted several hours.

"Especially when we see the United States position and the Senate sanctions bill [the same day as the terrorist attacks on Tehran which killed 17 people], all their objectives are revealed", Larijani said, adding "the enemy's strategy is to damage Iran's dignity and busy our authorities with side issues".

Iranian police killed two four suspected terrorists, including two foreigners, associated with the militant Islamic State (IS) group in the southern province of Hormuzgan and seized explosives, guns and the group's flag, an Iranian news agency reported on Monday.

On Sunday, the head of the justice department in Kordestan province in western Iran announced more arrests.

Alavi said the planner of the deadly attacks was stationed in the border areas and left the country after the terror attacks were carried out.

"The mastermind who controlled the team. who had fled outside the country. paid the price for his crimes, with the cooperation of intelligence services of allied countries", Mr Alavi told state television.

The speaker claimed to represent the "first battalion" of Daesh formed inside of Iran.

In a condolence message ahead of a funeral for the victims, Khamenei said the attack "will not damage the Iranian nation's determination", state media reported.

In 1981, a bomb planted by an Iranian opposition group in Tehran killed 27 Iranian members of parliament and dozens of other officials.

ISIS claimed the attacks on Wednesday, also publishing a video that it claimed was from the parliament building.

Iranian lawmakers said the intelligence minister had assured them that "all Islamic state elements have been eliminated" in the country.
