Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan officially ended his "fast for peace" on Sunday afternoon, which he had begun on Saturday in the wake of farmers' protests and violent clashes in Mandsaur.
The families of five farmers who died in police firing during protests last week in Mandsaur, had last night urged him to call off his fast. She said that the cops had forcibly entered her house while chasing down the protesters from a farmers' rally on Friday at Phanda Kalan village near Sehore.
Breaking his fast after 28 hours, CM Chouhan assured the farmers that their demands will be taken into consideration and acted upon, although he did not give any statements regarding farmers' loan waivers. State Congress president Arun Yadav described the end of the fast as the culmination of the "five-star fast'". "We haven't seen any chief minister keeping a fast for poor farmers", a farmer told ANI.
After protests became rough across the state post the firing, the Chief Minister began what came to be dubbed a "peace fast". Home Minister Bhupendra Singh had initially issued a strong denial about police's involvement, but confirmed it later. He said he will not let the state be inflicted with violence at any cost. Only 20 per cent of farmers were loan defaulters and efforts will be made to bring them under the interest-free loan beneficiaries category.
Cavs halt Warriors flawless postseason, party in Game 4
No, this is not a joke! Power forward Kevin Love had his best offensive game, scoring 23 points and draining 6-of-8 3-pointers. Pick any cliché you heard regurgitated time and time again over the years and it fits for the Cavaliers for Monday's Game 5.
Senior Congress leader and former MP Meenakshi Natarajan denied the allegation that the Congress provoked the farmers to resort to violence.
In the morning, he met delegations of small farmers and representatives of 236 farmer bodies to hear their grievances.
In the last 10 days, farmers resorted to violence during their stir for various demands, including a complete loan waiver.
He announced a series of decisions aimed at the welfare of the state's farmers, including buying of all crops on Minimum Support Prices, purchase of milk as per Amul Dairy's formula, and setting up of farmers markets in Madhya Pradesh to save them from the clutches of middlemen.
