Gay Pride was originally celebrated primarily on parade days.
Either way, throwing a party as massive as Capital Pride takes a lot of, well, capital.
But, as CSW co-founder Rev. Troy Perry reminded us, Los Angeles made a decision to have a parade to celebrate the joy of gay liberation, in conjunction with the ongoing anger over still being denied first class citizenship. The Trump administration has not acknowledged June as gay pride month, Newsweek reported. "Capital Pride sponsors harm our communities, locally, nationally, and globally".
Yet, as Majors points out, lumping gays and lesbians (who may prefer single-sex showers) with transgender individuals (who could theoretically rob the gay and lesbian ranks if, say, athletic girls are pressured to "transition" to males rather than become lesbians) makes about as much sense as lumping blacks, Hispanics and Asians into a single "interest group" because they're all "people of color". "The trend here is far and away in the other direction", Harvey said, suggesting that Christians opposed to LGBT rights were facing discrimination.
Talbert said he feels betrayed because it shouldn't matter who you vote for. Washington Blade columnist Mark Lee described the town hall-style meeting in a column, writing that he "was disheartened and dismayed ... by the embarrassing demeanor and preposterous demands of a small gaggle of objectors" who were "hurling accusatory admonitions toward anyone not in agreement". "But we still wanted to make it happen".
Renna says the Pride board and staff have had intense discussions about this issue for months, especially after the May 8 meeting. Here's the link to his "Deplorable Pride" website: deplorablepride.org where he's raising money for lawyer's fees.
Defense Lawyer Attacks Bill Cosby Accuser Andrea Constand for Alleged Inconsistencies
Sewell said they didn't go to police at the time because her husband, a Los Angeles detective, feared the ordeal that would ensue. Cosby, after listening to Constand testify for almost four hours, struck a light-hearted note as he left the courthouse.
This year's parade features a new participant, the British Embassy, which will host a float in the parade that celebrates LGBT families.
Charlotte Uprising, a coalition of local groups and people who want to end violence against black people and other minorities, called attention to the material on its Facebook page Thursday, saying: "These types of threats or signs of malicious intent can not be ignored or dismissed as "jokes".
In conjunction with The Equality March for Unity and Pride planned in Washington, D.C. and several other marches around the country, The Equality March: San Diego is being organized for Sunday, June 11. As a result, the first banner in the parade "is going to be unapologetically queer and trans", Renna says. So of course there needed to be some parties celebrating Pride - and who better to kick that off than Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman, both held on Wednesday night. "It's a queer community that features a lot of folks who are of communities that find it hard to access living in San Francisco - queer and trans women, people of color, and queer and trans youth, queer and trans folks with kids".
"I don't think our process is flawless", she says.
Take to the streets for LGBTQ rights at the Equality March, starting at 10 a.m. from 17th and I Streets, NW.
