The shooting, which took place in a primarily black and Hispanic neighborhood in Balch Springs, which is about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Dallas, stoked simmering tensions over perceived racial bias in USA policing.

Jordan was shot and killed as he and some friends left a house party that had attracted the attention of a neighbor - then of police - because of possible underage drinking, police said.

A police officer in Texas who shot and killed a 15-year-old African-American teenager last week has been charged with murder, the media reported.

Oliver's arrest came after he shot Edwards on Saturday night as the teenager was leaving a party in the suburbs of Dallas. Oliver opened fire, striking Jordan, who was riding in the passenger seat. Balch Springs police Officer Roy Oliver was sacked three days after 15-year-old Jordan Edwards' death.

The vehicle was leaving after partygoers said they heard what sounded like gun shots nearby. "In fact, according to the video that I viewed the vehicle was moving forward as the officer was approached".

From his research, Stinson estimates that fatal shootings by USA police officers who are on duty occur about 1,000 times a year.

Additionally, independent defense attorney Peter Schulte said: 'A reasonable officer probably wouldn't have pulled out an AR-15 assault rifle at a call for a loud party with a bunch of teenagers'. Slager pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a federal charge of violating Scott's civil rights. "But we are getting close to that, to the extent that even in what seem to be the strongest cases for a prosecutor, such as the Slager case, a jury is just very reluctant to convict the officer".

Oliver's attorney, Cindy Stormer, didn't immediately return messages seeking comment.

"Although this does not take away the excruciating pain caused by the loss of a son, brother and friend", Lee Merritt, the attorney for the Edwards family, said in a statement, "the announcement that the appropriate warrant has been issued for the arrest of Roy Oliver on the charge of murder has brought a bit of reprieve in a time of intense mourning".

A private funeral was held on Saturday at the Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church.

Roy Oliver was investigating a call about underage drinking when he shot his rifle at a moving auto, killing teen Jordan Edwards.

Police chief Jonathan Haber said he made the decision after reviewing the findings of an internal investigation.

Oliver "violated several departmental policies", police said when they announced the termination of the officer, without offering details because he has a right to appeal.
