Police expect clash with or without Ann Coulter

It was announced on Wednesday that Coulter's speech had been canceled after the YAF - which has previously backed her against criticism - pulled out.

Dhillon said the university officials told her they wouldn't provide a room but Coulter could speak at an outdoor venue. The Washington Post reports that vibrant and charming alt-right personality Milo Yiannopoulous is planning a week-long free speech event in the fall that will include rallies in Sproul Plaza and the creation of a free speech award in the name of Mario Savio, the student leader of the Free Speech Movement of the 1964-65 academic year on campus, a move that Savio's son, David called "some kind of sick joke".

"I have no sponsor, no lawyer, no court order", she said.

Conservative speaker Ann Coulter said she won't speak at the University of California, Berkeley, on Thursday after losing support from a conservative group that had been seeking to bring her there.

In emails to The Associated Press on Wednesday, Coulter confirmed that her planned speech on illegal immigration, followed by a question-answer session, was canceled.

"What I am frustrated with right now is I think the GOP should change their motto to 'Next Time.' 'We'll fight this next time". "The university has two non-negotiable commitments, one to Free Speech the other to the safety of our campus community".

Coulter said in an email that the conservative youth group had prohibited the Berkeley College Republicans from hiring an attorney she had arranged to ask for a temporary restraining order.

'In the meantime we discovered that the University of California Police Department at Berkeley has an official "stand-down" policy for any situation that develops on campus as long as the situation doesn't involve the imminent loss of life, allowing the leftist thugs who have terrorized Berkeley's campus to do so without outcome'.

Last weekend, while thousands of people across the USA marched to call upon the president to release his tax returns, brawling broke in Berkeley between right- and left-wing protesters.

Earlier this month, 21 people were arrested when anti-Trump and pro-Trump groups clashed in a city park. They offered the college Republicans, who had invited Coulter, a different date and venue for the speech, but were turned down.

Berkeley is not the only American university to face protests against conservative speakers.

"Berkeley College Republicans do not want to endanger people's lives so because of the university's unwillingness to do their job we are forced to cancel the event", Troy Worden, president of the campus Republicans, said Wednesday.

"In effect our free speech has been stifled because the university has decided not to assist us in making sure the event can occur successfully", he said.

Blame: Coulter also blamed Berkeley and the YAF on Twitter.

Campus officials said they were continuing to brace for unrest they see as likely on Thursday.

But campus police Captain Alex Yao told a news conference late on Wednesday that his department would maintain "a highly visible presence" on Thursday, pointing to continued threats of violent protests.

He added that authorities plan to have a "very, very low tolerance for any violence" on Thursday. Berkeley police has also reached out to local and state police forces to inform them if they might be calling for assistance.
