At Berkeley, the site of countless protests and the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s, the level of extremism was unprecedented. The College Republicans group said Coulter's speech had been set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Sproul Plaza.
Some conservatives on Twitter reacted with anger and dismay to the news.
"The point of the fact is that Ms. Coulter is welcomed to this campus", he added.
A few, however, were pleased with the decision.
"We're anxious about it turning into a huge battle between her security and conservative militia and antifascists and others", Jandhyala earlier told the Daily Californian, a student newspaper. "But so too is our commitment to the safety of our students".
"It's an issue that hits home for many of our students", he continued. The law doesn't allow "masked antifa protesters" to threaten people at will, like they did during the Milo Yiannopoulos riots in Berkeley when city police "didn't lift a finger" to stop thugs. If it is to speak to a large audience, to make a case for their positions, to engage students in discourse, we stand ready to make that work on any date when a protectable venue is available.
On Tuesday, the Young America's Foundation and the Berkeley College Republicans sued school officials, claiming the public university was suppressing free-speech rights.
Berkeley student Gabriel Davtyan, who was at the Yiannopoulos protest, said he's all for police trying to keep the community safe and thinks they do as much as they can, confronting groups not affiliated with the university wreaking damage while also protecting individual free speech. But he said even if she cancels, some groups that support or oppose her could still turn out on campus on Thursday.
"Ann herself is using this a little to her advantage - to engage in the test of free speech", said Pranav Jandhyala.

MIKE SARGENT , Film Critic: At the time , a thriller and horror were kind of seen to be the same thing. "Such a kind man". After " Melvin and Howard ", Demme was tapped to direct " Swing Shift ", starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
He said anarchists were "attacking my friends" on the streets. "Berkeley should be ashamed for creating this hostile atmosphere". Last weekend, a rally against President Donald Trump led to several arrests downtown.
After insisting she would go through with her speech on Thursday, with or without university approval, Coulter changed her mind as support from student organizers collapsed.
The Chronicle asked about recent security measures on campus, including a fence around Dirks' home and a so-called "escape hatch" installed in his office.
"It's absolutely deliberate", Horowitz told Newsmax in an interview.
Even with the controversy, he said he and his peers planned to invite more conservative stars in their ongoing quest to break up Berkley's "liberal echo chamber". School administrators said previously that campus police had received credible evidence that outsiders would try to disrupt the Coulter speech.
Representatives for the Berkeley College Republicans, one of two plaintiffs in a First Amendment lawsuit against the University of California-Berkeley, seemed exasperated by repeated questions about the anti-immigrant writer at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
Pranav did criticise Berkeley Police for being too inflexible, however, and that the stand down order meant to prevent police brutality complaints is problematic.
Conservative commentator Ann Coulter's on-and-off-and-on speaking engagement at UC Berkeley is off again, The New York Times reports. Protesters, some wearing masks, climbed on the hood of his auto and pounded on the windows as he tried to leave.
