Top Trump administration officials insist the president's proposed tax plan, which would slash corporate and individual tax rates, will not add to the deficit. Although Republicans control the House of Representatives and Senate, some parts of the plan may be a hard sell, especially to Republican fiscal hawks.

The proposals were expected to be unveiled at the White House at 1:30 ET (1730 GMT) on Wednesday by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Trump economic adviser Gary Cohn.

Mnuchin, who is spearheading the administration's effort to craft a package that can pass Congress, described the plan as the "the biggest tax cut" in US history and said he hoped it would attract broad support.

Trump's tax blueprint will fall short of the kind of comprehensive tax reform that Republicans have long discussed, and serve chiefly as a guidepost for lawmakers in the House and Senate. Instead, Republicans are pushing for tax cuts and increased defence spending. "They order agencies to look into policy change, and even the big ones, like immigration orders, we've seen the courts step in".

Trump told a gathering of conservative media reporters Monday evening that he might be willing to wait until September for the funding. "I think that puts us middle-class people in a bad spot". "We're in agreement on 80 percent and on the (remaining) 20 percent we're in the same ballpark".

One possible reason for Trump's steadily sinking approval numbers is his failure to follow through on promises made during his campaign.

However, a near majority of the respondents - 48% - identified as most closely aligning with the Democratic Party, so it's unsurprising that they disagree with many of Trump's policy positions. USA stocks were little changed on Wednesday amid a flood of US corporate earnings.

The poll also found significant differences among Trump and Clinton voters in their news diet.

Mnuchin has said repeatedly that a top priority of Trump's tax plan will be tax relief for the middle class.

In addition to big tax cuts for corporations, Trump also wants to cut taxes for small business owners from a top tax rate of 39.6 percent to a top rate of 15 percent, said an official with knowledge of the plan.

The proposal faces a massive hurdle in that lower rates would blow a hole in the budget, possibly causing the national debt to soar by more than a trillion dollars over a decade.

As the 100-day mark of Donald Trump's presidency approaches, a new CNN/ORC poll finds the President reaches this milestone holding on to the lowest approval rating of any newly-elected president at this stage, amid sharp partisan divides and a failure to capitalize on post-election strengths.

The Republican president also will call for an increase in the standard deduction people can claim on their tax returns, an administration official confirmed on Wednesday. A work in progress regarding reforming Veterans Affairs is progressing well, with more to do.

Ordinary Americans who hope to see their taxes reduced are likely to be very disappointed. Senate Republicans have panned the idea, and officials in the Trump administration have sent mixed signals about it.

In March, House Republicans withdrew the health care bill they had introduced to replace the Affordable Care Act, canceling a vote when it became clear they lacked support for it to pass. The current number - only 28 percent think the party is in touch - has been noted elsewhere, and that number is concerning enough on its own: It's 10 percentage points less than the number of people who think Trump is in touch and 4 percent less than the number who think the GOP is.
