"With this leadership role now filled, I am hopeful that Secretary Perdue and I can work together for the benefit of IL families and farmers", said Sen.

The former governor of Georgia succeeds Tom Vilsack, who led the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the past eight years and who endorsed Perdue as his successor once the former Georgia governor was nominated by President Trump. He said he plans to be guided by four principles: maximizing the ability of farmers and agribusiness to produce, create jobs and sell their goods; prioritize customer service in the USDA; ensure a safe and secure US food supply, and stewardship of the land. "His long-standing ties to major agribusiness and chemical companies have made him out of touch with American values", said Tiffany Finck-Haynes, Friends of the Earth Food Futures campaigner. She underscored how critical it is for a Secretary of Agriculture to work with Congress after a bill is passed to implement it in a way that works for farmers, ranchers, and rural communities in North Dakota and across the country.

National Cotton Council Chairman Ronnie Lee, a Georgia producer, voiced praise for Perdue who previously served as Georgia governor. As one can imagine, Secretary Perdue has been anxious to get started in his job.

" 'I know he will put the needs of farmers, ranchers and others in rural America first, ' Roberts said". The current measure expires in 2018.

Perdue may also find himself in the uncomfortable position of defending agriculture in an administration that has so far given the issue limited attention, despite Trump's strong support in rural areas.

Trump has signed similar orders on trade, taxes and the environment.

At the hearing, Perdue said, "Food is a noble thing to trade". Specifically, I call on you to prioritize the following critical areas: "1) Advocate for free trade policies in any consideration of the North American Free Trade Agreement; 2) Advocate for USA leadership in the Pacific markets post Trans-Pacific Partnership; 3) Prioritize bilateral trade deals; and 4) Expand market access and make America more competitive". Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin encouraged the agriculture secretary to come to Wisconsin to talk to affected farmers, assuring him that he has his full support.

Trump has reached out to farmers on regulation, saying the government has too many rules that negatively affect farm country.

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Tuesday that looks to help the United States agriculture business by establishing a task force to identify impediments to the business' growth. "We are confident that Secretary Perdue will be a champion for USA agriculture and will help the Trump administration build strong relationships with key trading partners".

After months without an agriculture secretary, Perdue will be sworn in early Tuesday.
