Police and Protesters Clash in Caracas Despite Opposition March Passing Peacefully

Mass sit-ins in Venezuela, as anti-government protesters keep up the pressure for early elections.

Elsewhere in the capital, riot police fired tear gas at another group of protesters who threw stones at them. They are rejecting calls for dialogue and demanding the immediate scheduling of elections.

Each side has accused the other of trying to mount a "coup".

NY [U.S.A.], April 23 (ANI): In the wake of reports that as many 13 people were killed in one day in Venezuela's Caracas, people have planned to take to the streets dressed in white to pay tribute to those killed in the anti-government demonstrations this month. Last week, the International Monetary Fund projected Venezuela will have 720 percent inflation this year - the highest in the world - and 2,068 percent next year.

It's too late in the game for regional elections, Almagro told me. "That's what I say as head of state and prime minister".

The government has ruled out an early presidential election this year as opposition leaders have demanded.

Maduro won the 2013 election by a narrow margin over opposition candidate Henrique Capriles. But Maduro's popularity has since plummeted. A survey by pollster Venebarometro indicated that seven out of 10 Venezuelans disapprove of him.

Massive firing drill but no nuclear test
The United States has speculated that North Korea could carry out another nuclear or missile test timed to Tuesday's celebration. And the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier is also headed toward the peninsula for a joint exercise with South Korea.

Timochenko, the FARC's top leader, signed the communiqué in which Venezuela's opposition to paramilitarism in Colombia is compared to a guerrilla effort to discredit those opposed to the Maduro regime.

Falling oil prices have slashed its revenues, leading to critical shortages of food, medicine and basic goods.

Government leaders claim the violence is generated by right-wing opposition forces working with criminal gangs in an attempt to remove them from power.

Vatican-mediated negotiations between the two sides broke down. The court quickly reversed course, but its widely condemned move still galvanised the opposition. They later banned Capriles from politics. The court reversed that decision following domestic and worldwide outcries demanding separation of powers and a return to democracy.

The clashes between opposition supporters and backers of Maduro have intensified in recent weeks. Another eight were electrocuted in a looting incident that took place following a protest.

Eleven people died that day alone. "And if they died for this we don't have the right to rest".

MUD said one agreement struck with Maduro was for the release of an election schedule.

Maduro presented a video in which a woman, believed to be Carrillo, falls to the ground after being hit while walking through the center of the city, as both followers and opponents of the government organized marches.
