The Welshman injured his left calf during the El Clasico defeat to Barcelona at the weekend and will now miss both legs of the European tie against Real's fierce city rivals.

The 27 year old lasted less than an half an hour of the game after the club rushed him back from an ankle injury suffered against Bayern Munich earlier this month. "His recovery will continue to be assessed", the Guardian quoted Madrid as saying.

Zidane, though, insisted Bale was fully fit to play in the 3-2 loss to Barca.

"He is the first one unhappy with what happened, but he told me he was at 100 percent, that the two training sessions before the game were ideal, with no problems at all", Zidane said told reporters. But the doctors tell me it's a small thing.

Gareth Bale has played an important role in Real Madrid's recent domination in Europe but his time at the Spanish capital has been riddled with injuries.

In the coming weeks, Los Blancos face Champions League semi-finals but also have six key games in their battle with Barcelona for La Liga. "He was training normally, without any problems and in the end (the injury) happened, which is something we can't avoid".

Bale was handed a starting berth by Zidane in Sunday's Clasico but was replaced by Marco Asensio in the first half after sustaining the problem. "Hopefully he is with us before the end of the season". "I trust the staff here". When you've had a long-term injury, it is hard when you come back.
