Education secretary, teachers union chief visit Ohio school

"Students, parents and educators still want answers for a wealth of concerns based on Secretary DeVos's destructive record and refusal to commit to ensuring every child in every community has the opportunity provided by a great education at a neighborhood public school", García said in a statement to The Huffington Post.

DeVos's visit came after receiving an invitation from American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten. Weingarten has criticized Devos' view on school choice and favoritism towards private and for-profit schools.

DeVos has visited a handful of public, private, and charter schools since taking office in February.

She heard a presentation from the Van Wert Robotics Club. Big decisions aren't made unilaterally from the top; teachers work side by side with administrators and parents to improve learning and school conditions.

Van Wert has invested in early-childhood education and in a community-school model that connects children with social services they need to confront the challenges they are facing outside the classroom. DeVos and Weingarten were joined on the visit by Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria, Ohio Federation of Teachers President Melissa Cropper, Linda Haycock, District 1 representative to the State Board of Education, and State Representative Craig Riedel.

NewsChannel 15 will have coverage throughout the day on wane.com and on the news at Noon, 5 and 6. "We are the beneficiaries of start-ups, ventures, and innovation in every other area of life, but we don't have that in education because it's a closed system, a closed industry, a closed market", DeVos said in a 2015 speech. Meanwhile, Weingarten complained about budget cuts to crucial education programs.

Another flub in communications from the White House is drawing criticism after a Snapchat story sent Monday, misspelled Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos' title.

Pence avoids direct answer on North Korea sabotage
As a candidate, President Donald Trump said he would be willing to speak with Kim. Pence referred to his visit to South Korea earlier in the week.

After seeing demonstrations by the school's successful robotics and engineering programs - with projects from the elementary level through high school - as well as children learning in Laura Foster's preschool class, and a class project on The Depression in Nate Hoverman's fifth-grade class, both Weingarten and DeVos were complimentary of what Van Wert has done in a community where more than half the students are eligible for the free and reduced lunch program.

"If a public school is failing, a student should have the right to go to a better school", Murphy said.

"I look forward to continuing the conversation around how we can best give all students an equal opportunity to a great education that serves their needs", the secretary said. While the district lost around two percent of enrollment to charter schools in 2016, almost half those students have come back, according to the report.

"This community has a very different personality than New York City has, than Chicago [has]" she said.

The mistake is dripping with irony considering the fact that many, many Americans felt that DeVos was wildly under-qualified for the position of Secretary of Education, including Stephen Colbert, Seth MacFarlane and Alyssa Milano. Yet the parents or guardians of almost 20 percent of students who live within Van Wert's district lines choose to send their children to a nearby district or to a different option in Van Wert instead.

"There's no secret that we are fighting some of the budget cuts", Weingarten said noting that those cuts would be harmful to not only the Van Wert community, but others as well.
