Ousmane Dembele helped France beat England 3-2 with a late victor in an global football friendly at the Stade de France here.
Despite Harry Kane's opening goal for England, France rallied to take the lead before half-time through Samuel Umtiti and Djibril Sidibe.
Djibril Sidibe scored an nearly identical close-range goal on 43 minutes, and Kane added his second from the spot (48) as Raphael Varane saw red for a last-man foul on Dele Alli.
Confusion reigned for a minute inside the Stade de France as referee Davide Massa waited to hear from video assistant team of Marco Guida and Massimiliano Irrati, with the penalty compounded by Varane's controversial red card for bringing down Dele Alli.
Raphael Varane was sent off before a penalty was sacked home by Kane, with Les Bleus rallying as Ousmane Dembele capped a fine display by wrapping up a 3-2 victory that left Southgate frustrated.
France had Raphael Varane sent off three minutes into the second half but Didier Deschamps' side were the better team with 10 and deservedly won it though Ousmane Dembele 12 minutes from time.
"We will have to look back and see why".
Mauricio Pochettino, who has a knack for helping young Englishman infiltrate the Three Lions first team, played a mini prank on Trippier when he found out his right back had made the England squad.

At the other end of the table, a nightmare run-in has put newly-promoted Huddersfield as heavy favourites for the drop. Their last home match will be against Burnley on May 5, with a last-day trip to Huddersfield on May 13.
The Premier League golden boot victor had not played under Southgate until this get together and it is not hard to see why he is so central to England's plans. I think Gareth will be looking at that, and defensively I don't think he'll like how the team was spread apart.
"But clearly even with video not every decision will be 100 (per cent) - you won't get every single decision right".
Kane was disappointed England failed to go on to get a positive result, as they had with a last-gasp equaliser in Saturday's 2018 World Cup qualifier against Scotland in Glasgow. "You'll still get an element of one person's judgment within that".
Southgate has been making steady progress behind the scenes ever since, although the challenge ahead of him was made clearer at the Stade de France on Tuesday evening. "They are blistering and they will cause you huge problems on the counter-attack if you're not supremely well organised".
Tuesday night's game was tied at 2-2 when the 20-year-old Dembele scored off an assist by the 18-year-old sensation Kylian Mbappe in the 78th minute, reports Xinhua news agency.
Although qualification for the 2018 World Cup is nearly given, the recent defeats have thrown some questions top ponder for Southgate which need to be resolved before England head to Russian Federation for worldwide football's showpiece event next year.
"At 2-2, after the sending off, they went up a level in terms of what they were able to find and we didn't manage that period of the game well".
