The shooter was identified as 39-year-old Karim Cheurfi, a serial criminal offender who has tried to attack police officers in the past.
The vote is being closely watched as a pivotal event amid a global swing to the right, including Trump's election in November and Britain's decision to exit the European Union last summer, a move the U.S. president has applauded.
"Nothing must hamper this democratic moment, essential for our country", Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said after a high-level meeting yesterday that reviewed the government's already heightened security plans for the two-round presidential vote.
Two officials said Cheurfi was convicted in 2003 of attempted homicide in the shootings of two police officers. Reports said police also found a pump-action shotgun and knives in the vehicle.
The attack in Paris appeared a ideal fit for Le Pen and her barbed criticism of authorities she accuses of being naive on terrorism.
Mr Jugelé was among the officers who responded to the gun and bomb attack at the Bataclan concert hall in November 2015, one of a number of places targeted that night that saw the deaths of 130 people.
The Islamic State took responsibility for the shooting and identified the attacker as Abu-Yusef al-Baljiki in a statement on its video channel. It recalled recent attacks on French soldiers providing security at prominent locations around Paris: at the Louvre museum in February and at Paris' Orly airport last month.
On Friday, police officers gathered at the spot where their colleague was killed to lay flowers and say farewell.
In a survey released on Friday by research firm Odoxa, the first one conducted after Thursday night's attack on police officers in the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, 24.5 percent of the respondents said they would vote for Macron, down by half a point from a previous survey.

Meanwhile, centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron tweeted that he was ready to deal with the terrorist threat. The top two candidates from that vote head to a final round on 7 May.
"She won't be able to protect our citizens", Macron said. One officer was killed and two seriously wounded.
Investigators searched a home early on Friday in an eastern suburb of Paris believed to be linked to the attack and police detained for questioning three of the gunman's family members.
