She said the Conservatives would provide "strong and stable leadership" for Brexit and beyond, and promising to wage "a positive and optimistic campaign".

In her radio interview, Ms May said that if she had not brought forward the date of the election, Brexit negotiations would have been coming to a head just as the Government was preparing to go to the polls.

It had been hoped talks could start by the end of that month, but EU Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said Wednesday that "the real political negotiations" with Britain would not start till after the June 8 election.

May has even faced calls from some of her own MPs to debate Corbyn and other party leaders in the format that has been a custom since 2010.

Mr Munro added: "There is a proven track record over two elections and two referendums that debates reach huge audiences including a lot of young people who don't watch conventional political coverage in great numbers".

ITV confirmed it will host a leaders' debate during the general election campaign, while a senior BBC journalist said the corporation would not let a single politician stop a programme which was in the public interest.
