Russia blocks U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria

Russian President Vladimir Putin's meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson hasn't produced any positive shift yet in Russia-U.S. relations, the Kremlin said Thursday.

During a joint press conference in Moscow with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov dismissed allegations that Russia interfered in the 2016 election. The AP also reported that Lavrov said Russian Federation was looking to understand U.S. President Donald Trump's "real intentions".

The deal was suspended after USA strikes against a Syrian airbase following last week's suspected chemical attack in Idlib province, in an act Moscow labelled "aggression against a sovereign state".

The council was meeting ahead of a vote later in the day on a draft resolution demanding that the Syrian government cooperate with an investigation of the suspected chemical attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun. "What we do know and we have very firm and high confidence in our conclusions that the attack was planned and carried out by the regime forces at the direction of Bashar al-Assad", Tillerson added.

Russian Federation and the United States on Wednesday agreed to keep on fighting global terrorism and continue discussions on Syrian conflict settlement, despite turbulent bilateral relations and a string of pending disputes between the two countries.

Russia's alleged meddling in the United States presidential election also hovered over the first face-to-face encounter between Mr Putin and a Trump administration Cabinet member.

Moscow and Washington had also agreed to continue cooperating to try to find a political solution for Syria, he said. "The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship".

"Currently, 40% of voters say they approve of how Trump is handling foreign policy". "We want to see all the ethnic groups in the country to feel protected, justly represented in all the branches of government".

Tillerson said Tuesday that Assad's time leading Syria was "coming to an end" and that Russian Federation could lose relevance in the Middle East if it continues to support Assad.

Russian Federation called for an impartial investigation into the chemical weapon attack and said moving towards regime change in Syria would only destabilize the region.

"Unfortunately, we've got some differences with regard to a majority of those issues", Lavrov lamented.

However, Mr Johnson said there was a "large measure of support" for the plan. First and foremost, there was an important conversation with President Vladimir Putin.
