The immigration minister said yesterday the 457 visa "brand" had been "tarnished beyond all repair" by the former Labor government allowing so many foreign workers entry into Australia.
Australia on Tuesday abolished a visa programme used by over 95,000 temporary foreign workers, a majority of them Indians, to tackle the growing unemployment in the country.
In the announcement posted on Facebook Tuesday, the Prime Minister says the changes will involve a number of new requirements for skilled migrant workers.
The main countries from which 457 visa holders come are India, Britain, China and Ireland.
Workers in about 650 occupations can qualify under the 457 program in Australia.
As well as that, a new training fund to help Australians fill skills gaps will be introduced, with the new four-year visa will also result in fewer permanent residents because of the eligibility changes.

Occupations such as sales & marketing managers, advertising managers, web designers, and a raft of ICT roles will only be available on a two-year temporary skills visa.
The Australian Council of Trade Unions echoed the call for independent research into labour shortages and described the changes as "more spin than substance".
Echoing United States President Donald Trump and his "America First" mantra, Mr Turnbull said he wanted to focus on "Australian jobs and Australian values".
A second four-year visa will require a higher standard of English language skills as well as a proper criminal check.
Australian Industry Group chief Innes Willox said the existing 457 visa system was opaque and open to abuse and he expected the new scheme to be more transparent. Crucially for Indians hoping to use the 457 route, the new two-year visa can not be used as a pathway to permanent residency. Just under 2,000 temporary visas were granted to Irish citizens between 2015 and 2016, excluding secondary applications.
Benjamin Williams, who was about to be sponsored for a 457 visa, told the BBC: "I'm absolutely devastated and don't know what to do or where to go from here".
"The high and increasing numbers of IT professionals are being granted 457 visas".
