The marathon was the second hottest on record in the last 40 years.

More surprisingly, so are the Americans.

While the Boston Marathon finish line was the scene of many thrilling finishes and personal achievement, another common sight Monday was runners struggling to finish or needing immediate assistance once they did.

"It's so exciting to see Americans being competitive here", said Rupp, the Olympic bronze medalist who was making his Boston debut. "It's a real exciting time".

Kirui finished in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 37 seconds to claim a silver trophy, a guilded olive wreath from Marathon, Greece, and the $150,000 first prize.

Rounding out the top 10 were runners from California, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Utah. We grew up with these myths and many, many women were afraid of sports and running in particular, distance running, and it was deemed somewhat socially unacceptable. She pulled ahead of Rose Chelimo of Bahrain in the Newton hills to win by 59 seconds.

Switzer's boyfriend, Thomas Miller, threw a block that knocked Semple out of her way, allowing the 20-year-old runner from Syracuse University to finish the race in 4:20:02 at a time when women were thought to be too fragile for long-distance running. "It's just a matter of time", Linden said. "And when the Americans break the tape, it's going to be a big day out here, and we're really close".

In addition to Rupp, the American men in the top 10 were Shadrack Biwott (fourth), Abdi Abdirahman (sixth), Augustus Maiyo (seventh), Luke Puskedra (ninth) and Jared Ward (10th).

Shepherd said as she looked through the large mouth hole of the approximately three-foot tall Easter bunny head. Each egg was filled with candy and small prizes, and these kids were also very quick to scoop up these eggs.

Ethiopians swept the titles previous year. Instead she registered as "K.V. Switzer", and traveled with Arnie to Boston. "If you ran the distance in practice, I'd be the first to take you to Boston".

"In my mind, I was sure that one day I would win this race", said Kirui, 25, who was running just his third marathon.

"Anytime I would see somebody walking i just stopped and talked to them and just gave them the motivation to keep going because I knew because I knew i needed it myself", she added. The last was Meb Keflezighi in 2014; he raced in Boston for the final time on Monday, weeks before his 42nd birthday, and finished 13th.

"That's one reason by Jock Semple and I became the best of friends", Switzer said today.

"The crowd got me through the finish line", he said.

Also running on Monday was Ben Beach, who completed the race for an unprecedented 50th time in a row. Her bib number has become an iconic and vital symbol of equality, and on April 17 members of 261 Fearless will honor the 50th anniversary of Switzer's run.

"A big man, a huge man, with bared teeth was set to pounce, and before I could react he grabbed my shoulder and flung me back, screaming, "Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers!"
