Another student was injured in the incident which took place on the university premises, prompting officials to close the campus.
While hearing the Sou Motto Case, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice restrained the Peshawar High Court (PHC) from constituting a Judicial Commission to investigate the murder of Mashal Khan, a 23-year-old Journalism Student of Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan who was lynched to death on April 14 by a mob over blasphemy allegations.
Responding to a question about the association of the arrested suspects with political parties, Mehsud said that the police will only consider the arrested individuals' suspects and not focus on their political affiliations.
Mardan District Police Officer Dr. Mian Saeed said that at least 45 people have been arrested by Thursday evening.
A second student told a magistrate he had testified before a university "congress" on the day of the killing, accusing Khan of blasphemy, according to the documents seen by AFP.
Police arrived and managed to yank a wounded Abdullah to safety, he said.
"They could have easily saved his life but they stood away from the mob".

Abdullah was beaten by other students even after he denied the accusation that he was an Ahmadi, which is considered to be heretical. The arguments caught the attention of "several hundred students".
A local imam had refused to lead the funeral prayers at Khan's funeral on Friday, according to Swabi resident Salman Ahmed.
Pakistan has been struggling to combat the much larger and more well-established Pakistani Taliban, which emerged after the 2001 US -led invasion of Afghanistan and have carried out attacks that have killed tens of thousands of people.
