Trump defends about-face on labeling China a currency manipulator

Referencing fears that may arise across Europe due to US-Russia relations, the US president said he hopes that will "have to fear nothing...that would be the ideal situation".

"When our trading partners engage in currency manipulation, they impose significant, and often long-lasting hardship on American workers and businesses", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. But the restriction merely put in place United Nations sanctions passed past year with China's support - before Trump took office.

President Trump's turnaround followed a press conference on Wednesday afternoon where his stance towards Russian Federation was described as uncharacteristically negative, as the two world powers remained at odds over military action against the Syrian regime.

Trump's gestures to Moscow even fueled perceptions that his campaign and Russian Federation were colluding to help him get elected - a possibility the Federal Bureau of Investigation is now investigating.

It may be that Trump, the businessman-turned-world leader, is discovering China's transactional approach to foreign relations is better suited to achieving his own goals.

The Russians are backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against USA charges that his air force dropped a bomb loaded with the nerve agent sarin on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun on April 4, killing 87 people, many of them children. "I would like to get along with everyone", Trump continued.

China a currency no go
The Trump administration has settled on its North Korea strategy after a two-month review: "Maximum pressure and engagement". The test rocket "blew up nearly immediately" after its launch from a base in Sinpo early today, the U.S. military said.

"They're not currency manipulators", Trump told the The Wall Street Journal in an interview.

The comment was Trump's first in response to a failed missile test by North Korea overnight. The talk came after North Korea had reportedly fired an unidentified missile early on Sunday from its eastern coastal city of Sinpo.

"Well they, I think they're grand champions at manipulation of currency".

"The U.S. hasn't gotten anything from China yet", said Evan Medeiros, who was Obama's top Asia adviser in the White House.

During a joint news conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, US President Donald Trump said Washington's relations with Moscow are at an "all time low", adding, "We're not getting along with Russian Federation at all".

For Trump, it's a dramatic reversal from his repeated campaign pledges to forge a new U.S.
