Brief marriage precedes fatal school shooting in San Bernardino

Police said the shooting occurred in a multi-grade special education classroom with students from first to fourth grade.

Staffers knew Cedric Anderson, who had been estranged from his wife for about a month, and he got into the school by saying he had to drop something off for Smith, officials said.

Mrs Smith had 15 children in her classroom at the time with around 500 in the school in total.

The family of Jonathan Martinez, the 8-year-old student killed in the shooting, did not wish to speak publicly, Marsden said.

The other students were evacuated and taken by bus to California State University at San Bernardino.

Two students were hit by bullets as they were standing behind Smith, the police chief said.

Anderson, a resident of Riverside, was armed with a large caliber revolver when he walked into the classroom where his wife Elaine Smith, 53, was teaching.

Anderson had a prior criminal history that included weapons charges, domestic violence and possible drug charges, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said, though he did not immediately provide any other details.

"This is a time when we do stand strong and we do stand together and a time we overcome the hatred with grace and peace", said San Bernardino City Unified School District Superintendent Dale Marsden. "I don't know what to tell her", Barajas said as the two held each other and sobbed after the ordeal that sent police flooding onto the campus of San Bernardino's North Park School. The two suspects, 28-year-old Syed Rizwan Farook, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27, were later killed in a shootout with police.

"The administrative office lays eyes on a person before they come into the building", said Wade "You buzz your way in and that is one of the ways that we make sure that the people who are coming into our schools, who are going to be around our students or physically on our premises, are supposed to be there".

Pursuant to the school shooting, police said they believed the shooting to be the result of a domestic murder suicide specifically targeting the teacher. As soon as she saw the guy with the gun, she went under the table. He also posted several photos from early February that appeared to have been taken on their honeymoon in Sedona, Ariz. The other student, a 9-year-old, is expected to recover.

Barajas learned her daughter, Marissa Perez, had been sitting at her desk Monday morning when a gunman stormed into her classroom, shot her teacher to death, killed one of her classmates and wounded another before killing himself.

"Those closest to her said that she had mentioned that his behavior was odd and that she was concerned about his behavior", he said at a press conference on Tuesday. "She would never put the lives of her students in danger", Smith told NBC 4 Los Angeles. "It seems surreal that she is gone, that I will no longer hear her voice and that she won't see her granddaughter grow up".

She added that several children were crying and holding their teachers' hands.
