"Over the past year, the government has moved to making several services available through Aadhaar...this too is a major step forward", Union Science Minister Harsh Vardhan said at a press conference to mark the 250th anniversary of the organisation's founding, "The Aadhaar is to ensure that only Indians are able to access this portal".
The Survey of India which is the principal mapping agency of the country is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year and it was originated way back in 1767.
The Naksh-e Portal is for free download of OSM maps in PDF format for public use through Aadhar based user authentication, the Survey of India said on Monday.
Aadhaar number is a proof of identity and not that of citizenship.
The maps to be made available through the portal http://soinakshe.uk.gov.in/ will make it easier for residents of villagers and panchayats to readily access information, said Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Science.

The SGI has the mandate of making maps and cartographic documents for the country. Topographic maps also called the open series maps contain man-made geographical features including terrain or topography are prepared by the SoI since its inception in 1767 and is in conformity with the National Map Policy-2005.
"Earlier, even government departments had to pay some amount to get the maps from Survey General of India".
The conference was jointly organized by the FICCI, the Survey of India and the Department of Science and Technology.
"After Gorkha quake (Nepal earthquake) in 2015, to answer various doubts of scientific community, the Survey of India proposed re-measuring the height of Mount Everest as an Indo-Nepal Joint Scientific Exercise, along with the Survey Department of Nepal", the minister said. The measurement of the world's highest peak has been made by the SGI.
