Colorado appeals court judge Neil M. Gorsuch took his oaths to be the Supreme Court's 113th justice Monday, first in a private ceremony at the court and later at a Rose Garden ceremony with the man who nominated him, President Donald Trump.
Trump picked Gorsuch to fill the court vacancy in late January, and last week the U.S. Senate gave its approval after a contentious, partisan confirmation process that ended with a 54-45 vote in the Republican-led chamber.
Later at the White House, Justice Kennedy administered a second oath to Mr Gorsuch, who was his former law clerk.
Judge Neil Gorsuch has been confirmed as a US Supreme Court associate justice, after the Republicans invoked a "nuclear" option in a bid to ensure his confirmation.
His nomination to a life term marked President Donald Trump's first opportunity to shape for a generation a court that is the ultimate arbiter of numerous most contentious issues in American life.
"To the American people, I am humbled by the trust placed in me today".
While Republicans and the White House praised Gorsuch as a mainstream and qualified jurist, Democrats sounded the alarm over past rulings that they said reflected a preference for corporate interests. The Republican-controlled Senate did away with the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees to confirm Gorsuch.
During 11 years on the federal appeals court in Denver, Gorsuch mirrored Scalia's originalist approach to the law, interpreting the Constitution according to the meaning understood by those who drafted it.
Embattled US Bank Takes Back $75 Million From Former Executives
The board's actions to remedy the problem were insufficient to one Wall Street critic, the Washington-based group Better Markets. The bank has also been calling its tens of millions of customers to ask whether they authorized the creation of those accounts.
Early on in his career, he served as a law clerk for Justice Kennedy.
Gorsuch will be put to work immediately.
In Justice Gorsuch, they see a man of great and unquestioned integrity.
As I watched the incredible dignity of President Trump, Justice Anthony Kennedy, and now-Justice Gorsuch, I realized how 'President Trump has exceeded my expectations. As such he will likely be on hand when the justices meet on April 13 for their routine closed-door conference which will include deciding whether to hear several pending hot-button cases including the Peruta "may-issue" concealed carry challenge from California. "I promise you that I will do all my powers permit to be a faithful servant to the Constitution and laws of this great nation", he said.
Gorsuch will take part in the court's next round of oral arguments, starting on April 17. Those cases potentially could be reargued in the court's next term, which starts in October. "You've just been confirmed to the United States Supreme Court", she said. Donald Trump joked to an audience that included other Supreme Court justices.
He was raised Catholic and attended Catholic elementary schools and a Jesuit-run Catholic high school in Maryland, Georgetown Preparatory School.
Gorsuch joins the court that is often the final arbiter for presidential policy.
