With the exception of three, Democratic senators seemed poised to vote against Gorsuch's confirmation.

Gorsuch fills a vacancy on the court that had been open for over a year since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

That came after Republicans failed by a 55-45 vote to muster the 60-member super-majority needed to end the Democratic filibuster that had sought to deny Gorsuch confirmation to the lifetime post.

Trump announced the 49-year-old Colorado native as his pick to join the Supreme Court in late January, contending that he is "a man of our country and a man who our country needs - and needs badly - to ensure the rule of law and the rule of justice". Soon after, the Supreme Court will arguments in Trinity Lutheran Church v. Comer, a case that could set an important precedent for separation between church and state.

While the court's political leaning is expected to look the same as it did when Scalia served, the court's partisan breakdown could change if liberal justices such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg or Steven Breyer - who are 84 and 78, respectively - retire or die during Trump's presidency. "Throughout his career, Judge Gorsuch has shown an unparalleled depth of understanding and respect for our Constitution".

Gorsuch's confirmation restores the nine-seat court's 5-4 conservative majority, and enables Trump to leave an indelible mark on America's highest judicial body. Roberts will administer the oath at the court, and Justice Anthony Kennedy will preside at the White House.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said of the rules change that won approval: "It will make the cooling saucer of the Senate considerably hotter, and I believe it will make the Supreme Court a more partisan place".

Senate Republicans sold out their future to get Gorsuch confirmed, which means that they won the battle, but Democrats won the war to dismantle the tools of future Republican obstruction.

Conservatives hailed Gorsuch's confirmation.

Democrats opposed Gorsuch's nomination, in part, because Trump selected him from a list compiled by right-wing think tanks like the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society. The Supreme Court shouldn't be changed too much right now. Speaking on the Senate floor, the Kentucky Republican reminded Democrats they had used the nuclear option in 2013.

"(Republicans) made history in denying a presidential nominee a hearing and a vote, which had never, never happened before in the history of the United States", said Democrat Dick Durbin of IL.
