Police officer Sharad Shelar says the rebels triggered a land mine blast in the forested Gadchiroli area in Maharashtra state as the vehicle was passing through on Wednesday. The reception and the programmes were cancelled as a mark of respect for the police personnel, who lost their lives in the Maoist attack in Gadchiroli district, it added. The incident happened when a team of the C-60 squad commandoes, an anti-naxal unit, was patrolling the Kurkheda-Korchi road.
The attack is belived to be a retaliation by the Maoists after 40 extremists were gunned down by security forces on April 22 past year near Bhamragarh in the district. "I am in touch with the DGP and the Gadchiroli SP", he said in a statement.

Fadnavis said the state police was prepared to give a fitting reply to left-wing extremists.

Mungantiwar said that the Maoists are "angered by the highest turnout in Gadchiroli-Chimur Lok Sabha constituency" in the recent 2019 parliamentary elections which has prompted these violent reactions.
