The measles outbreak has spread to 15 states throughout the country, and the number of cases through the first three months of 2019 is approaching the total number of cases for all of past year.

Even more alarming is how easily it can be transmitted: airborne particles, droplets, and direct contact with any respiratory secretions of a person who's infected.

The outbreak has mainly been isolated in a couple of communities within Rockland County, which is just north of New York City, but the whole community is at risk, he said, noting that there have been complications among patients, including a premature labor and a handful of hospitalizations.

There have been 181 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn and Queens since October, majority involving members of the Orthodox Jewish community, according to the CDC. The county, located outside New York City, also banned unvaccinated people under age 18 from public places. In the early days of the outbreak, people were cooperating with health officials and getting children vaccinated, he said, but that has changed.

The anti-vaxxer movement has gained momentum over recent years, but, as some parents choose not to get their children vaccinated, it's the community as a whole that faces the consequences.

Humbach said police won't be stopping people and asking for vaccination records. "We are taking the next step in that endeavor today", County Executive Ed Day said in a statement.

This county alone has faced 153 cases of measles, so is looking for a new solution to the problem.

The new legislation was introduced following a surge in measles cases - now officials in Italy say that the vaccination rates have improved since it was brought into action.

"It has found its way through social media and confused parents and confused people about the importance of vaccination", Siepser said.

"They've been told, 'We're not discussing this, do not come back, '" he said. "This type of response is unacceptable and frankly irresponsible". "It endangers the health and wellbeing of others and displays a shocking lack of responsibility and concern for others in our community". "We want to encourage people to get vaccinated". Since October 2017 measles outbreaks have been reported in Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Surrey and are all linked to ongoing large outbreaks in Europe. Public health officials are likely keeping a close eye on Rockland County's latest order to see how well it works. Wendy E. Parmet, a professor of health policy and law at Northeastern University, wondered in an interview with Gold and Pager of the Times.
