Pakistan releases captured Indian pilot as confrontation cools

Pakistan retaliated, shooting down two Indian aircraft Wednesday and capturing a pilot.

India has demanded the release of a fighter pilot shot down by Pakistan warplanes in a major escalation between the two nuclear powers over Kashmir.

India's home ministry issued a notification against Jama'at-e-Islami on Thursday night, accusing the group as "unlawful association" and supporting militancy in the region.

But Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told CNN recently that while the JeM chief is indeed in their country, as per his information, Azhar is "unwell to the extent that he can not leave his house".

The first war broke out over Kashmir after partition divided the subcontinent into India and Pakistan.

"During that half a kilometre run, he fired some more gunshots in the air as well, to frighten the guys but to no avail", said Muhammad Razzaq Chaudhry, 58, one of the eyewitnesses.

The agency said all domestic and worldwide flights would be allowed to and from Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta.

Tensions spiraled dangerously after Pakistani jets crossed into Indian territory in response to India's bombing of a suspected terrorist camp inside Pakistan a day earlier. Forty CRPF soldiers were killed in the attack. That year also saw an Indian fighter jet shoot down a Pakistani naval aircraft, killing all 16 on board.

A group of schoolchildren brandished a painting of the pilot, along with saffron, white and green Indian flags and placards reading: "Hope for peace between India & Pakistan" and "Thank you Imran Khan", referring to Pakistan's prime minister.

The foreign minister made these remarks during an interview with CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour regarding Pakistan's ongoing tensions with India, which was sparked by the Pulwama incident and has since led to armed conflict at the Line of Control. That was in response to a query about why Pakistan did not just arrest Azhar in the face of current India-Pakistan tensions.

In a statement, the agency said the government decision about the closure of the air space will remain effective until 1 p.m. on Friday, after which authorities will announce whether they are reopening it or keeping the airspace closed.

"If PM Imran Khan manage to bring peace in Afghanistan and succeeded in improving ties with India, he can be a strong contender for Nobel prize for Peace".

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal acknowledged his country received a "dossier" from India about the February 14 attack.

On Friday Saudi Arabia's minister of state for foreign affairs, Adel al-Jubeir, is expected in Islamabad with a message from the kingdom's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
