Prime Minister Narendra Modi had past year scrapped 1,000 and old 500 rupee notes, in an attempt to tackle black money and corruption.

"From today to November 8, the BJP will develop public opinion in support of the government's anti-black money steps", Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, while addressing a press conference here.

"The Opposition parties had earlier chose to observe November 8 - the first anniversary of demonetisation - as "black day".

The finance minister also said that the National Democratic Alliance Government's policy has been to take steps towards ending or mitigating the black money economy in the country.

The war of words between Rahul Gandhi and Arun Jaitley began when the former took a jibe at Modi government's newly-introduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) and called it Gabbar Singh Tax. He said over 99 per cent of the money the prime minister had junked has returned to banks as it was genuine money of the people and not black money and only 0.0013 per cent of black money has been found.

"Modinomics and Jaitleynomics have destroyed India's economic growth story".

The Congress and other opposition parties have announced they will observe "black day" on November 8 across states to protest the note ban, which had sucked out 86% of the currency in circulation at that time.

"The entire logic given by the Prime Minister has utterly failed".

The Congress leaders also questioned the government claims that demonetisation had encouraged digital economy, saying that digital transactions were 94 lakh crore in November 2016 and grew by "mere" 10 lakh crore in July 2017. "They forget to mention that 5 times more "Black Money" was unearthed by Congress-led UPA in its last two years", said Sharma.

Hailing the Centre's announcement of Rs 2.11 lakh crore for bank recapitalisation as "historic", BJP chief Amit Shah has said the move will not just give an impetus to businesses, but also provide employment to the youth.
